Can You Still Be Contacted For Debt That Was Erased a Decade Ago?
Fighting off your debt is a great thing and you need to make sure that it is something you accomplish. If you have successfully fought off your debt then congratulations. We know how tough that probably was and we are glad you did it. One thing that people worry about is whether or not they can be contacted for debt that has been erased for a long period of time. Is this something that is possible? Let’s take a look at the possibility of this happening and what you can do to make sure that it does not come back to haunt you again.
Is This Possible?
Well, yes and no. Yes, it is possible that you can be contacted by the debt collectors even though you have paid off your debt over a decade ago. This is something that has been known to have taken place. No, you do not have to pay them any money if you have already paid off the debt. This is something that bad collectors might get you to try and do, but you should not fall for it. Just because they contact you does not mean that you have to give into their demands. Paying for something just because someone tells you to is not a good thing to do.
What Can You Do?
In order to protect yourself you need to make sure that you hold onto all your important paperwork that you had with the debt. Make sure that you note when you paid off your debt, and that you paid it for the correct amount. This way you can show those collectors that you have all the proper documents and that you follow the rules just like they were stated. This is why it is so important to make sure you maintain important financial documents at all times. You never know when it will be helpful to have some document around.
Make Sure You Pay It All Off
When you are still stuck in debt you need to make sure that you are completely sure of how much money you are responsible for. You need to pay off every single cent of your debt. The reason you want to have an idea of the exact amount is because guessing on when the right time to stop paying debt is not smart. That is how you can be contacted later in life for debt you thought you paid off. Know the exact number you are on the hook for and then make sure that it is completely paid off, so that you will have no worries in the future.
